As we begin to move further into the winter months and temperatures throughout Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire start to reach below 10°C even pushing below 0°C at times, spending time in your luxury hot tub, starts to feel like a better idea than ever before. Being able to soak in the hot water whilst getting massaged by powerful jets, is a luxury we should all be able to enjoy throughout the year, especially the winter months.

Unfortunately, as with most activities in the cold, some extra precautions need to be taken to ensure everyone’s safety whilst operating your hot tub in the winter. From investing in a high-quality hot tub cover to the maintenance steps you should take if you’re planning a winter getaway, in this blog, we’ll answer all your questions as we cover our top 5 tips and tricks for the care and maintenance of your hot tub this winter.

1. Should I Keep My Hot Tub Running In Winter

If it were possible, it’d be ideal for all of us to leave our hot tubs running consistently throughout the colder months of winter, ensuring none of the water in the hot tub or flowing through the pipes freezes over in the cold weather possibly causing them to burst and other critical components to fail. With the increase in energy prices, this is becoming less and less possible to achieve, this is why we recommend the regular circulation of water throughout your hot tub daily, on colder days this would help prevent the water from stagnating and slowly freezing over.

Should I Drain My Hot Tub In The Winter?

In contrast to keeping your hot tub running, some people think they should drain their hot tub completely of water throughout the winter months to prevent freezing, as experts in hot tub maintenance the Blue Lagoon Spas team will always recommend against this. If freezing weather is forecast in your area, always avoid draining your hot tub even if it appears to be empty some water will remain within the pipes, jets and filter bays. This small amount of water will still cause serious issues when it freezes over.

3. Will A Hot Tub Cover Prevent Water From Freezing?

As the weather starts to show signs of freezing over, ensure you have a well-insulated hot tub cover with a tight-fitting seal that fits your hot tub correctly. If your hot tub cover correctly fits and is undamaged all the necessary heat should be kept inside and prevent the water from evaporating as quickly when the cold water is heated.

To ensure you have the correct hot tub cover for your luxury hot tub, you can take a look through our Covana range online or contact our specialist team at 01270 58 66 55.

4. How Long Should I Stay In My Hot Tub During Winter?

Even though having a long soak through the cold weather may be tempting to rid yourself of any cold temperaments, we would generally suggest only staying in your hot tub for around 20-30 minutes at a time, this is to ensure you don’t overheat or cause yourself any harm once you exit the warm water back into the cold air.

If you wish to stay in longer than this we would suggest taking a break after 20-30 minutes before getting back in. If this is your plan then be sure to keep some drinking water nearby to stay hydrated and replace your fluids. Be sure to take care as you do exit your hot tub as you may start to feel faint or dizzy as you transition between temperatures.

5. What Should I Do With My Hot Tub If I’m Going On Holiday?

If you’re planning to take a trip to get away from the cold this winter and don’t want to leave your hot tub susceptible to freezing or damage through this time, the most ideal solution we have found is to have a friend or neighbour check in on the hot tub for you, having them run water through it for a short time every day to fight back against any water freezing over.

For some, however, we know this may not be possible so we recommend running through a few steps before leaving for your trip. Start by checking your pH and alkaline levels ensuring these are correct should allow your water to stay clean and healthy if you’re not away for too long. After this clean out your filters to make sure no dirt or debris is left in them and your hot tubs water can cycle through to be continuously cleaned. To ensure your hot tub is kept clean throughout your break, as we’ve mentioned before make sure your hot tub cover is secure and no debris can enter your hot tub.
