This article presents some important tips to remember in order to use your hot tub or spa safely.
Personal Safety
- Avoid alcoholic drinks before or during use of your hot tub.
- Ensure children are supervised at all times when using the hot tub.
- If you have high blood pressure or similar conditions, or are pregnant, seek medical advice before using a hot tub.
- If you are being prescribed medication, especially if it causes drowsiness, you should check with a doctor before using a hot tub.
- Don’t stay in your hot tub for too long, and don’t fall asleep!
Equipment Safety
- Ensure your hot tub is covered and locked when not in use to prevent children or animals from falling in.
- Don’t set the water temperature too high – not more than 40°c, or 30°c for young children.
- Keep electrical devices away from your hot tub unless they are properly waterproofed.
Consumables Safety
- Keep your hot tub chemicals locked away in properly labelled containers and make sure children or pets can’t get at them.
- Always follow the instructions when using spa chemicals, and make sure you use the correct amounts in the right dilution.
- Don’t try to cut corners by mixing different chemicals together – you may get unexpected reactions.
- When dissolving hot tub chemicals, always use a clean container and add the chemical to the water, not the other way around.
- Always handle your spa chemicals in a well ventilated area or outside.
- Wash your hands after working with chemicals, and clean up any spillages immediately.
