We’ve recently added Endless Pools swim spas to our range of products.   Swim spas (also known as fitness pools or exercise pools) are like a hybrid of a hot tub and a swimming pool.  They use a special water flow system to provide a continuous current to swim against.  This allows the user to swim in place.  It provides all the advantages of a full size swimming pool without requiring anywhere near as much space or water.  They can be fitted anywhere – indoors or outdoors, free standing or flush with the floor.

The user has complete control of the temperature of the water and the speed of the current, and there are various accessories and add-ons such as underwater treadmills and even rowing machines which increase versatility and the range of exercises the swim spa can be used for.  Unlike a conventional swimming pool, a swim spa can simulate swimming in open water.  The user doesn’t have to stop to turn around every few seconds like they would in a standard pool.

It’s this latter feature which makes the Endless Pool system a vital part of the training regime of Olympic Triathlon medallists Alistair and Jonny Brownlee.  The endless current allows them to train all year round whatever the weather, and features such as mirrors and underwater video recording allow them to monitor and improve technique.

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for getting a full body workout, and is particularly good for rehabilitation after injuries as the warmth and buoyancy can help ease and support painful joints.  The underwater treadmill accessory allows running in a very low impact manner as the body’s weight is supported by the water, reducing the stress on knee and ankle joints.  The Brownlees credit this with allowing them to maintain fitness after injuries and greatly improve recovery times.

Of course you don’t need to be a professional athlete to benefit from an Endless Pool.   Because the current is completely controllable they’re great for swimmers of any skill level, whether you’re looking for a relaxing swim after work or a regular workout.  Some models even include a separate hot tub compartment with all the luxury features you would expect to find in a stand-alone model.
